Leave types

The Leave types parameter acts as the foundational, qualitative definition for any category of absence an employee may take.

Configuring a leave type

To establish a new category of absence, navigate to Absence management > Setup > Leave types and select + New.

The following parameters dictate how the system processes requests for this specific type of leave:

1. Request type

Defines the high-level operational classification of the absence.

  • Time off: Standard, typically short-term absences (e.g., Annual Leave, Sick Leave).
  • Leave of absence: Formal, typically long-term or legally mandated absences (e.g., Maternity Leave, Sabbatical) that may impact benefits or payroll processing differently than standard time off.

2. Category

Establishes the scheduling expectation, which can influence managerial approval workflows and workforce forecasting.

  • None: No specific scheduling categorisation applied.
  • Scheduled: Absences that are planned and requested in advance (e.g., Annual Leave, Jury Duty).
  • Unscheduled: Unplanned absences (e.g., Sick Leave, Bereavement).

3. Unit

Determines the granular unit of measurement for how this leave is consumed and tracked.

  • Hours: Utilised for hourly workers or highly flexible environments where partial-day absences are common.
  • Days: The standard metric for salaried personnel.

4. Rounding rule and precision

When accruals or requests result in fractional units, the system must resolve this mathematical ambiguity to maintain ledger integrity.

  • Rounding rule: Instructs the engine on the directional logic to apply (None, Up, Down, or Nearest).
  • Rounding precision: Defines the fractional step. For example, if the unit is Days, applying a precision of 0.5 ensures that leave balances are always rounded to the nearest half-day increment.
note

Once a Leave type is formally defined, it must be bound to a Leave plan before employees can begin accruing time off.
