Location Properties
Overview
Location Purpose and Location Type are two short reference lists that you configure once and then assign to locations when building your warehouse structure. They serve as classification labels that let you filter and group locations throughout the system.
These properties are currently used for filtering and classification only. They do not affect inventory posting, transaction routing, or any automated system behaviour at this time.
Both pages follow the same pattern: a searchable list on the left and a simple detail form on the right. They are found under Location Management in the current navigation and will be moved to Setup in a future release.
Location Purpose
A Location Purpose describes the intended role of a location — what kind of activity takes place there. This lets you quickly filter locations by their function (for example, "show me all receiving locations").
Default purposes
The system ships with five standard purposes:
| Code | Name | Description |
|---|---|---|
ADMINISTRATIVE | Administrative | Administrative or organisational location without physical inventory |
SALES | Sales | Location used for sales-side operations |
SHIPPING | Shipping | Location from which goods are dispatched to customers |
RECEIVING | Receiving | Location where incoming stock is first accepted |
STORAGE | General Storage | Standard storage location for holding inventory |
Fields
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Code | A short unique identifier for this purpose (e.g. RECEIVING). Set at creation. |
| Location purpose name | The display name shown throughout the system. |
| Description | Optional free-text explanation of what this purpose represents. |
Managing location purposes
To create a new purpose:
- Select + New in the toolbar.
- Enter the Code, Location purpose name, and optionally a Description.
- Select Save.
To edit: Select a purpose from the list, then select Edit in the toolbar. You can update the name and description. The code cannot be changed after saving.
To archive: Select the purpose, then select Archive. Archived purposes are removed from dropdowns but preserved in the database. Select Archived items to view or restore them.
Location Type
A Location Type describes the physical or organisational nature of a location — what kind of place it is in the real world or in the warehouse hierarchy.
Default types
The system ships with seven standard types representing the typical levels of a warehouse and logistics hierarchy:
| Code | Name | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
COMPANY | Company | Top-level entity — the organisation itself |
COUNTRY | Country | Geographic country level |
CITY | City | Geographic city level |
WAREHOUSE | Warehouse | A physical warehouse building or facility |
ZONE | Zone | A named area or zone within a warehouse |
STORAGE | Storage Location | A specific shelf, bin, rack, or storage position |
MOBILE | Mobile Location | A mobile unit such as a forklift, cart, or transfer vehicle |
Fields
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Code | A short unique identifier for this type (e.g. WAREHOUSE). Set at creation. |
| Location type name | The display name shown throughout the system. |
| Description | Optional free-text explanation of what this type represents. |
Managing location types
To create a new type:
- Select + New in the toolbar.
- Enter the Code, Location type name, and optionally a Description.
- Select Save.
To edit: Select a type from the list, then select Edit in the toolbar. You can update the name and description. The code cannot be changed after saving.
To archive: Select the type, then select Archive. Archived types are removed from dropdowns but preserved in the database. Select Archived items to view or restore them.
The seven default types cover most warehouse and logistics setups. Only create new types if your physical structure genuinely introduces a category that none of the defaults describe.
