Service Object Groups
Service object groups are labels that sort the devices you service into families, such as Inverters, TVs or Chargers. A service object is one particular device belonging to a customer (for example one specific inverter with its serial number). Groups let you find, filter and report on devices of the same kind.
Create the groups before you register devices: every service object must belong to a group.
Opening the page
Go to Service management > Setup > Service object groups.
You need the privilege read service object groups to see the page, and create service object groups to add, change or delete groups. Ask your system administrator to grant them to your role (see Roles).
What you see
A list of all groups with two columns:
| Column | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Code | A short identifier, for example INVERTERS. |
| Description | What the group is, for example Solar inverters. |
The toolbar above the list has Back, Save, New, Edit, Delete and, at the right, Refresh.
Add a group
- Select New. A new empty row appears in the list.
- Type a Code and a Description in the row.
- Select Save.
A message confirms Service object group added, and the group appears in the list.
Rules for the code:
- 1 to 20 characters.
- Letters, digits, hyphens (
-) and underscores (_) only. No spaces or other symbols. - It is saved in capital letters:
invertersbecomesINVERTERS. - It must be new. If another group already has the code, you see A service object group with the code … already exists.
- It cannot be changed afterwards. If you made a typo, delete the group and create it again (possible only while no device uses it).
The description is required and can have up to 200 characters.
Change a group
- Select the group's row.
- Select Edit.
- Change the Description. The code is read-only.
- Select Save, or Cancel to discard your change.
Delete a group
- Select the row, or tick the boxes of several rows.
- Select Delete and confirm.
Deleting a group is allowed only while no device belongs to it. A group that still has service objects cannot be deleted. You see a message with the number of devices; move or delete those devices first.
If something goes wrong
| You see | What to do |
|---|---|
| The code must be 1 to 20 letters, digits, hyphens or underscores. | Remove spaces and symbols, and shorten the code. |
| Enter a description of up to 200 characters. | Type a description, or shorten it. |
| A service object group with the code … already exists. | Choose a different code, or edit the existing group. |
| This service object group no longer exists. Refresh the list. | Someone else deleted it. Select Refresh. |
| Save or cancel the row you are editing first. | Finish or cancel the row that is in edit mode before starting another action. |
Good practice
- Keep groups few and meaningful: by type of device is usually enough. Brand and model belong on the device itself, not in a group.
- Use short, readable codes:
INVERTERS,TV,CHARGERS. - Agree on the list before several people start adding groups, so you do not end up with
INVERTERandINVERTERS.
